Booking Through Thursday: Comfort Food

I got a laugh out of today's Booking Through Thursday:

Okay . . . picture this (really) worst-case scenario: It’s cold and raining, your boyfriend/girlfriend has just dumped you, you’ve just been fired, the pile of unpaid bills is sky-high, your beloved pet has recently died, and you think you’re coming down with a cold. All you want to do (other than hiding under the covers) is to curl up with a good book, something warm and comforting that will make you feel better.

What do you read?

I'm laughing because my back has decided to not like my new workout and I've been laid up most of the day. So I grabbed a book and got reading.

It's a Marcia Muller, whose Sharon McCone series is like visiting with an old friend, but truth be told, the book I most want to read: Anything with Trevor, Mitchell, and the gang.

Hopefully, one day, you guys will agree.

For me, it's either Judith Merkle Riley's The Oracle Glass, Pamela Dean's modern take on the legend of Tam Lin, or if I'm really and truly sick then the Narnia Chronicles :). Yes, you might say I retreat into a fantasy world when I'm not feeling well...

Hope your back is better soon!

Narnia? Really? I couldn't get past the third one, which back then was The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (I think). I don't know; they didn't do it for me somehow.

As for the back, at the moment it's happier. I'll go easy on it tomorrow at the gym. Maybe.

If you like girlie books that aren't idiotic, try Jennifer Weiner. She is amazing!

I have, yep!

Sorry the timing was so good! (You know, I didn't really mean it to be a "live" question....more, hypothetical....)

My comfort books range from the somewhat literary ("Candide") to the silly ("The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody," or the Hitchhiker's series by Douglas Adams).

These books have kept me sane through hard times by reminding me how silly humans are, and helping me put things back in their proper perspective.

"...All you want to do (other than hiding under the covers) is to curl up with a good book..."

What?

Sheesh!

What happened to going on a bender or arranging for a Toga Party!

Hey, I don't write the questions, Rhet. I just answer 'em.

For me it's anything Georgette Heyer.

I always have a pile of books -- I just grab whatever is there and start going. When I was sick I was reading two books a day and had to go through all my kids books.

The I am really really sick books: The Stand or any of the Outlander novels.

Heck, I already agree!

{{{hugs}}} on the back pain. That's not even a little bit fun.

If I'm feeling miserable, though, light romance or mystery is the way to go--I think I need that resolution at the end to feel better. Either a HEA or catching the bad guy.

Still in pain???
Cause I know I already read this post and it's not like you not to update.

Nah, the back's settled down. I'm busy playing with that other back pain victim. *grin*

Was going to say I hoped your back was better, but I see you are already playing again... I love light romance or character based stories when I want to curl up.

Just wanted to say thanks for dropping by my blog and commenting. I need all the encouragement I can get to exercise since my body doesn't have that gene.

Comfort books for me are mysteries, especially Robert B. Parker and Anne Perry.

One day? I already want to read a book with those guys!

And I love the Sharon McCone series.

Hope your back is better soon.

Hope you feel better soon.

My comfort books usually is the Stephanie Plum books or Charlanie Harris' vampire ones

A comfort book? I've been wanting to reread The Once and Future King.

Only if the session of comfort reading involves a subway sub and chocolate. *sigh* Now theres comfort for me.

What would I read...likely Tamara Pearce's Circle of Magic series. Yeah its a kid's series, but I stil love it. A great escape from the grownup word.

Oh, and by the way, I remember you mentioned being interested in hearing more talk about magic. I have started a weekly magic chat on my blog if you are interested.

Oh, I loved that series, too! I read it a year ago, maybe? It was recent.

I just finished Decaffeinated Corpse by Cleo Coyle. I love nothing better than a good cozy mystery on those bad days.
