Booking Through Thursday: Oh, Horror!

Another good one from the good folk at Booking Through Thursday!

What with yesterday being Halloween, and all . . . do you read horror? Stories of things that go bump in the night and keep you from sleeping?

This one is so good because for about a month now, I've been slowly working my way through Shock Rock II, a collection of short stories about ... well, rock and roll. Some of the stories are predictably delish and so far, only one's not been able to meet the standard of writing set forth by the others. The collection will end with a collaboration between Kevin J. Anderson someone previously unknown to me and Rush's amazing Neil Peart.

This book was published in 1994, making it a one of my favorite sorts of reads: A Hidden Treasure.

While Shock Rock I and II seem hard to find, you writer friends who publish with Samhain and Ellora's Cave and those other cool e-publishers might want to check out Jeff Gelb's erotic horror fiction, a collaboration with Michael Garrett. Check out this review.

As for the second part of that question... do they keep me from sleeping? Maybe. Something's sure giving me vivid dreams and nightmares lately, but is it the phase of the moon, the time of the month, stress, or the stories? Who knows? Who cares, so long as the fiction's good? Sleepless nights mean more writing time!

Talking of vivid dreams I have just watched a two part TV programme 'Britz'
about an Asian brother and sister - she is radical and he joins MI5. It culminates in the sister detonating her body pack whilst her brother is holding her. It was so real and so thought provoking it has stayed with me. If you get the chance to see it do - although it's not everybody's cup of tea.
Michele says hi!

Sorry = it's me again. I thought it was Smiler but you snook in:) Here fromn Michele again.

Michele sent me over to see you, Susan. Hi!

I rarely read or watch horror themed subjects but doubt that they'd give me any trouble sleeping. My favorite thing about Halloween is the candy sales on November 1st. I bought over 20 pounds of Smarties this year. I do love those things!

Hey Susan!!! Michele sent me! And I will be back!!!
Awesome blog!

Hi Susan. Just stopping by to see what you're up to.

Hey, do I know Michele? Think she'd send some folks my way? Or am I too ... risque?

You know... I can't remember the last horror book I read. I do remember the last book that scared the piss out of me and that was Jurassic Park (the Veloceraptors are what did it). Of course, I was reading it IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RAINFOREST in Central America at the time and our hut was occupied by bats in the roof (they keep away the bugs I was told).

I love a good suspense horror film, but most horror these days is all shock and no substance.

Dude! You've got to read Matthew Jarpe's Radio Freefall. Seriously: it's all about rock-n-roll. You'd love it. And it's a debut novel!

Horror should be spine chilling. Most make laugh.

It's already on my wishlist, duder. Now to find it!!

My sister LOVES Neil Peart. I ripped his ticket when I worked at the theatre and he and his family came to see 'Tosca'. (Yes, his late wife and late daughter.) Another totally crazy small-world thing happened when my husband and I were living in the small fishing town of Yarmouth from 99-01. A big storm was coming and a lot of small vessels had taken shelter in Yarmouth harbour. Brad and I were walking along Main Street on the way to Foodland, when a lone man was heading in the opposite direction. Before we passed him I realized: it was NEIL PEART!!!! I just smiled and nodded as any Maritimer would do. He returned the nod. I think he'd moored his sailboat before the storm. Totally bizarre, eh?
