Thursday Thirteen #61 -- Home on the Range

If you haven't been here since my return from Yellowstone, let me recap for you:


Thirteen Things from Yellowstone


1. I've learned the wisdom of wool socks. I've vowed to only wear bamboo and wool socks from now on. We'll see if I can accomplish this; cotton's cheaper. But not nearly as nice.

2. This guy was on the menu every night we were in the Park. Yum. (Well, okay, it was his farm-raised cousin. But you get the idea.)


3. I survived snowshoeing. This elk didn't. Or maybe he was there as a trophy for my first snowshoeing experience.


4. This guy -- we think -- along with a friend welcomed me to my first snowshoeing trip. He and his friend stood forty yards apart... on opposite sides of the trail we were taking, and didn't leave us a way around him. So the eight or so of us had to thread the bull elks. Who had big antlers that could have hurt us. Badly.


5. I put on four layers of pants and stood outside with a small group -- ten or twelve of the twenty-seven of us -- and watched this beautiful lady erupt for the last time in 2007.


6. This is her last daylight eruption of 2007.


7. This is her in 2008. She's aging well, isn't she?


8. She wasn't the only thermal feature with things to say.

9. Daisy went off.


10. Riverside went off.


11. Castle went off.


12. Seeing all three of these -- and the cross-country ski group got to Lonestar just as it erupted, too -- was pretty darn special. One of our three guides (who live nearby and do research in the park) said he's been waiting years to see Castle erupt. I decided it was the Park's way of thanking us, since we were there as part of a National Parks Conservation Association trip.

13. Yep. Saw wolves. From a distance. A great distance. I bet they knew we were there, only able to see them through our spotting scopes.

Days started out around zero or negative five or ten, and the highs were around 20. Let me tell you, 20 feels HOT by the last day! The day we were at Old Faithful, I took three showers!!!

Nice pics! It looks very cold, though. I know I would've suffered. If I go, I'll go in summer.

I bet the hot springs were fantastic after a day out in those temps!

Wow! Sounds like a fabulous trip!

You cracked me up about wool socks. I had to wear them in Basic Training and I don't miss them! But then, I've never lived in a cold climate.

When I lived in AZ, some elk came trampling through our campsite in the middle of the night. Talk about exciting!

Another gorgeous photo essay! This has been a particularly rich set of Thursday 13's. I LOVED the geysers....wow. The only thing I didn't like was the dead elk....awwwwww.

Beautiful. Expect to see a link to it soon. I "collect" great photo essays, being addicted to them myself. This is the THIRD today and some weeks there aren't any at all...

It's so beautiful. Um... random comments? Elk are very scary, I think. Have you seen a mad bull elk? very scary. We eat bison chili about at least once a month. It's good - more Omega 3s than 6s.

Beautiful photos, Susan. Especially #5,6, and 13. I've been to Yellowstone, but with much less snow. What a great way to enter the new year.

You also saw a lot more wildlife then I did... but then again, you probably attract party animals... haha.

I don't really do TT's any more, but I do have something up this week that I think you'll appreciate. :-)

Wow, I love all the photos! It looks like you had a great trip.

You must be able to tolerate the cold well though, I'd never be able to wander around Yellowstone in the winter.

That research into long underwear paid off -- it didn't feel nearly as cold as I'd expected.

Plus, I seem to acclimate pretty quickly. This wasn't the first trip I've noticed how fast I've adapted to the weather.

I'm so glad that you got to see wolves. And geysers. And that large animals with pointy antlers did not do you insult. :)

Awesome pics! I've been to Wyoming (plan to live in Colorado because T's parents live there, his dad's in Cheyenne now because he works for Union Pacific), but we nixed the trip to Yellowstone because we didn't want to have to deal with small ones in the car. It would have been our 2 in ours (P was only a year, D was 10), and 2 in my bil's! Oh yeah, and it was really hot in July 06!!!

Oh, Susan --- I'm *swooooning* and *sighing* here. The area around Yellowstone is my Dream Place to live. I was there as a nine year old, and I never forgot it -- thank you so much; your pictures brought back some wonderful, cherished memories. :)
