Fast Facts: Trevor Wolff
1. He stands five foot ten. Really. Truly.
2. He weighs about 120. Soaking Wet.
Okay, that may be an exaggeration, but not by much. Trevor's one of those skinny guys, almost scrawny, with the flat, hollowed-out chest and a little tuft of chest hair dead-center over the breast bone.
3. His nose has been broken more times than he can count. It's ugly, misshapen, and has a hook in it. But it works and he'll take it.
4. When it comes to being a member of ShapeShifter, his value isn't in his bass playing. Far from it, in fact. In some circles, Trevor is known as the luckiest no-talent on the planet. Some say even hard work can't save him. But the band is Trevor's vision of Mitchell's dream, and no one can imagine a Trevor-less ShapeShifter.
5. Here at the Meet and Greet, Trevor often rules the roost -- no small feat for a fictional character. As we get closer to the annual Musical Hanukkah Celebration that ShapeShifter throws every year, you'll be seeing more of him again.
I know you groupies will be pleased.

Thursday Thirteen #70 -- Famous Fictional Women
Some of these women you've met before. Others I created just this week. Let me know who you'd like to see more of and, just like the list of bands the other week, I shall do what I can to oblige.
![]() |
1. Zeynep Goldstein. This not-terribly-observant Muslim woman married a not-terribly-observant Jew and, without meaning to, found a way to begin to bridge the centuries-old hatred between the people of the two religions. (Although, as a Jew, I didn't know of this hatred until about ten years ago, at most. Must be a hidden hatred, or am I that sheltered?) 2. Toni Lauren Smith -- One of eight children, Toni and her husband Leon decided to seek fulfillment by not contributing to the world's population problem. Instead, they work tirelessly to promote the conservation of the world's green spaces and the flora, fauna, and wildlife that dwells within in. (If you think she wasn't inspired by a certain blogger, you're nuts.) 3. Maureen -- Also known as More to Roadie Poet, she is helping (along with the real-life women out there) that women do belong in the often-sexist world of roadies. 4. Aliyah -- Created last week, all I know about Aliyah so far is that she's a chemist, doing research in a New York City lab into alternates for petroleum. Her partner is a big-shit record producer, also in New York. She keeps him grounded and proves, yet again, that it takes a good woman to make a man great. 5. Sara Deaver -- a single mom who teaches her community and social circle how to live with grace under pressure. 6. Alina Kozlova -- A historian by training, Alina brings history to life, with the help of a team of sociologists, pyschologists, and every other -ologist she deems necessary. First through articles in a national news weekly magazine and then through her own books and later podcasts, Alina makes history sexy -- and reminds us of the relevance of the past in today's world. 7. JC Montecino -- The US Government's top IRS fraud inspector. Despite long hours on the job, JC raises a family of seven children. With the help of her stay-at-home husband who somehow finds the time and energy to constantly be renovating at least one room of the four-bedroom house. 8. Pauline Smolinski -- A Holocaust survivor, at 80 she begins a new career as a Food TV host. As a judge of Iron Chef America and all those food competitions where people create crazy things and win ten grand for it, she's not afraid to show what's what in terms of the importance of food and nourishment. 9. Beverly Buck -- Big Buck's wife. Those of you who hang around know that Big Buck's Best Barbecue is one of those places in the fictional city of Riverview that no one can get enough of. Beverly is responsible for creating Bodacious Sauce. She's also the one who takes the mobile barbecue on the road, proving that women can barbecue with the best out there. 10. Sassy Brody -- A lawyer whose rising star has people hoping she'll be named US Attorney General. 11. Ruby Red -- fashion designer to the stars, she helps turn the musical culture into something other than sex and the ghetto. 12. Bunny Fitzgerald -- At the tenderish age of 20, Bunny Fitzgerald took the skateboarding scene like a storm. The first female pro with a reputation as good as Tony Hawk's, Bunny takes that board and flies with it. Rumor has it that Shaun White thinks she's hot, but the idea of being Bunny White scares her sleepless. 13. Lyric Maker -- You've met Lyric on these pages before. Stay tuned; there's more of her to come. LOTS more. |

Thursday Thirteen #38 -- Lyric's
Many of you guys liked seeing Lyric in action on Monday, as part of the poetry train. (Go read it if you haven't yet!)
Since Lyric is one of my favorite characters, too, I thought I'd bring you a Thirteen all about her.
![]() |
| 1. Lyric is the eldest daughter of Melody Maker, porn queen extraordinaire. Her fraternal twin sister, Allegra, is four minutes younger. Youngest sister Harmony is four years younger. 2. Melody has no idea which of a few candidates fathered her three children. For all anyone knows, there were three fathers. Or maybe only one. The one thing we're all sure of is that men WERE involved. Frequently. 3. Lyric, Allegra, and Harmony were all raised around the porn industry. Pregnancy didn't stop Melody from making films. For awhile. Then she moved behind the camera, into consulting on wardrobe, makeup, and other details. In front or behind the camera, Melody was savvy enough to make sure any movie she was involved with said "A Melody Maker Movie" on the front cover. 4. Lyric and Allegra decided in their teens that they didn't want to be part of adult films. Allegra had no clear plans, but Lyric decided to go to massage therapy school. She figured that at first, she could trade on her famous name to build her clientele, but she'd earn their return business. 5. As a massage student, fresh out of high school, Lyric needed someone to practice on. Melody liked to turn the scene into a film, Allegra was out trying to find a place where she fit in, and Harmony at fourteen was just too young. It was Melody who suggested Lyric find a guy in band, especially since Lyric liked music so much. 6. ShapeShifter was on the verge of taking the city by storm, and Lyric smelled opportunity. Linking to them early would help solidify her reputation as a real massage therapist. After all, any girls who were allowed inside ShapeShifter's inner circle for any length of time were either girlfriends or girls who refused to put out but were valuable in other ways. Lyric was, of course, the latter. 7. Lyric picked Mitchell because he was the quietest ShapeShifter member. Someone as shy as Mitchell wasn't likely to turn a massage into something sexual, and since he barely spoke, he wasn't likely to brag about their deal: free massages in exchange for a spot on the band's guest list. And the occasional ShapeShifter t-shirt. As she got to know him, she was surprised to find she'd developed a loyal friend. 8. Massage was great, but Allegra was still lost and Melody was finally making noises about being done with films. It was Lyric to the rescue. 9. With input from Melody and a silent business partner who became her landlord, Lyric opened a retail shop, Lyrical Pleasures. Allegra had a job, and so did Melody whenever she wanted it. Harmony too, once she was old enough. 10. Lyrical Pleasures quickly became THE place in Riverview. And for good reason: Lyric stocks everything from exclusive and limited-quantity club wear, outfits for strippers and drag queens -- including wigs, shoes, and anything else they wanted -- to lingerie and sleepwear, videos, and, of course, gear and toys for consenting partners. You can be as demure or as naughty as you want at Lyrical Pleasures. She even sells such innocuous things as the most luxurious bath beads she can find. 11. Because of the store and her reputation for discretion, Lyric knows pretty much everything happening in Riverview, from the underground to the top governmental figures and the people who really run the city. 12. Lyric and Kerri have a lot in common. In fact, once the two women meet (thanks to Mitchell, of course, when Kerri complains that Mitchell's reputation as a kinky bastard is overblown), they become fast friends, having Mitchell and ShapeShifter in common, as well as drag queen pageants. Lyric knew Kerri's name long before they met, as Kerri did the makeup for many of her queen friends in her pre-Mitchell days. 13. What's the deal with Trevor and Lyric? She's not one of his conquests, much to his chagrin, although truth be told, he doesn't try very hard. Her reputation as straight-laced and not overly interested in those sorts of relationships precedes her, and that's how she likes it. |

Fiction: Walter
Secondly, if you weren't here yesterday and are wondering who Walter is and how he fits into the grand scheme of things, scroll down and read yesterday's Thursday Thirteen. That should give you the background you need, but really. You can blame it all on Wylie. I'm not calling this an outtake because... I have no idea what it is yet. Maybe an outtake. Maybe the start of something longer. Tell me if you want more.
And anyone who catches the reference to another TTer and writer wins a cheer.
There was no doubt about it: Walter's fingers were stiff and sore come morning. In some ways, they didn't feel like fingers at all, but like claws, or those skinny little bird's toes, all red and rumply. The sort you stared at as they moved, presaging disaster.
A few of those pills that Dr. Rosen had prescribed worked wonders. Over the years, Walter had learned not to ask what sort of pills Dr. Rosen was giving him. They worked, they got him through, that was all he needed to know. They gave his fingers their life back so that the show could go on.
Walter rolled over in bed and grabbed for his cigarettes and the lighter with the big, arthritis-happy flicker. The show… ahh, the show. The one that they said would tank, not last all these years. The one they said that fifty-year-olds had no business performing.
Tell that to Rat Catcher, Walter thought with a smile. They were as old as he was, had been at it as long as he had, and could still rock the house. Maybe not as long or hard or with as much energy, but they could still rock.
So much for those preconceptions of youth, Walter thought. Better to die before the aging process set in. Better to hang it up before age 40, just because 40 was when you got too old to have long hair and play the guitar for more than ten people at a party held in your living room.
It was funny to hear the young kids who came to play with him or just pay homage. A lot of them still believed those old tales. They'd blurt out something stupid like that, firmly inserting their feet in their mouths, all the while completely oblivious to it.
Walter and Dr. Rosen would have themselves a few good laughs about it later on. Sometimes, Lila would join them for those laughs, but usually, she held back. Lila wasn't much for laughing at anybody anymore, least of all the young kids with stars in their eyes. She'd learned the hard way how that sort of behavior could backfire on you.
So had he, which is why Lila and Dr. Rosen were the only people he laughed with. Over the years, as his acquaintances had grown, his trusted inner circle had shrunk. People were too fast to sell you out, to crawl over you in their own race for the top.
How many times had he sat down with an eager young kid who wanted to be his next disciple and told that kid that being on the top didn't matter? That having a steady, loyal audience and a consistent sales level was where it was at.
They'd always point out that in addition to a disciple, Walter himself was always latching on to a new hot guitarist with a huge following. They never got that it was all about marketing, that the idea was to use the hot guitarist to draw in new fans, many of whom stayed once the hot guitarist had cooled and drifted off into obscurity or a spot playing behind true has-beens like Jim Shields and Terry Fantillo.
The only ones who stuck around were the smart ones, the ones who did a stint with Walter and then went on to create their own band. Or to join a band with staying power, like Rises the Night.
He'd seen all sorts of kids over the years. The cocky ones, the quiet ones, the sex-obsessed ones, the junkie ones. He'd learned. And he'd survived.
And if you've missed it somehow, Just a reminder... go vote for me!

Thursday Thirteen #18 -- Introducing Pam Derbish
![]() |
I said a few weeks ago that I'd be introducing a new character to these parts. But then we all know what happened here with Thursday Thirteen and, to be honest, Wednesday and Thursday of last week just sucked for me. NOT a time to bring someone new into the fold. However, like most of the women who populate my fiction, Pam doesn't hold back when she's been promised something. So... without further ado, 1. Her hair was originally a caramel brown. 2. She went blonde when she was 12 and never looked back. 3. She began exercising because she was terrified she'd wind up like her parents -- overweight, diabetic and emphysemic. 4. She fell in love with her own muscles, once she saw them. Their shape and strength was addictive. 5. Implants only made her look better. She was eighteen when she got them. 6. She avoided the eating disorder trap because those muscles need fuel. 7. That said, she is extremely careful about what she puts in her body. 8. She's not a huge drinker. 9. That makes being around ShapeShifter difficult. 10. She discovers ShapeShifter mostly because they are the hot thing in Riverview when she's sixteen. 11. She doesn't particularly like their music. 12. She loves the attention Trevor gives her. 13. Trevor is a bit of a means to an end -- stay tuned for what that means. |

Thursday Thirteen #16 -- More About Trevor Wolff
![]() |
Over the past few weeks, I've been helping you guys get to know the characters of Trevor's Song in more depth. Here's some more about the star of this show, Trevor Wolff. Thirteen reasons why Trevor picked up the bass 1. Four strings means two less to learn. 2. Mitchell told him to. 3. Bass players are moody, elusive, and hypnotic. 4. Bass players were in short supply in Riverview at the time they decided to create the band. 5. Anything in short supply is in demand and therefore hot. Desirable. Maybe even respected. 6. Bass can be as much or as little as you want to make it, and it all sounds good. 7. Bass is the backbone of the metal sound even though most people don't pay attention to it. 8. It'd piss off Hank once he heard what his son was doing. 9. Mitchell's sister Amy bet him he couldn't do it (jury's still out on who won that bet). 10. It seemed the easiest thing to learn to play if he was going to be in this band he was dreaming up. 11. He could practice in his and Mitchell's room and not the garage, like if he had drums. 12. Mitchell's father, Patterson, showed up one night with a used bass in the back of his car and said that Trevor didn't need to pay him back for it if he'd learn to play it. 13. Whenever someone says he can't, that's a sign that he must. Have you been following the Debut a Debut submissions? See them here and expose yourselves to some great new reads. Be sure to stop in on the 19th to see who won our store of great prizes! Special thanks to Heather for the cool banners! Links to other Thursday Thirteens! |

Thursday Thirteen #14 -- Meet and Greet Trevor Wolff
![]() |
If you haven't been here in a few days, this place has been jumping. Be sure to scroll down for the latest Debut a Debut news and author suggestions. (Have you checked out Tasha Alexander's And Only to Deceive? You historical and mystery fans should check it out!) Special thanks to Heather for the cool banners! Over the past few weeks, we've spent some time with Mitchell Voss, rhythm guitarist, vocalist, and frontman all around of ShapeShifter. In Trevor's Song, Mitchell has to share the spotlight with a true scene stealer: Trevor Wolff. (nevermind that the book is actually Trevor's story. Bet you didn't get that from the title.) Here's some bits about Trevor. Follow the links to read older outtakes that you might have missed, or to revisit them if you've already seen them. Some of them are among my most favorite moments in outtake history. 1. Trevor is the second-oldest of four. He has two brothers and a sister. 2. Jeremy, the oldest, and Hank Jr. (HJ) are carbon copies of their father. Trevor's always surprised that they don't reappear in his life, demanding money. 3. Trevor always assumed he'd scrape by in life, even though he always dreamed of something more. 4. He found a way to get that something more when he met Amy. (read about it!) 5. The first thing Trevor bought with his band money was his Vincent. 6. It wasn't in very good shape, and he talked local mechanics, Wrench, Hammer, and Torque, into teaching him how to fix it up himself. 7. Other than his bass and women, Trevor loves his Vincent maybe more than life itself. 8. And does Trevor Wolff love the women! He goes through them the way a person with a cold goes through a box of tissues -- and with the same understanding that this isn't going to last much beyond the clean-up. 9. Fortunately for Trevor, the girls love him back. Frequently, imaginatively, and satisfyingly. (is that a word?) 10. Trevor firmly believes that life is worth living, not merely coasting through. He'll try most anything once. 11. Despite a rather dark and disturbing upbringing, Trevor loves to laugh, play jokes, and be outrageous. 12. Trevor calls Mitchell's wife Rusty because after their first date, Mitchell said he was done with girls unless things with Kerri didn't work out. Thus, she caused Mitchell to grow Rusty. 13. No one really buys the fact that Trevor's in love with Kerri. But they all pretend to, so that Trevor can save face. Links to other Thursday Thirteens! 1. Thursday Thirteen #12 -- More about Mitchell
![]() |
(header by The Tour Manager; picture from Guitar World) We had such a good time last week talking about Mitchell, and he is one of my favorite characters, so I thought I'd bring you a bit more about him. After all, my meme contest is still ongoing for a few more days and while I've started to draw up some of the awards, there's still room for your entry. Get in on the fun and win yourself some books! Thirteen More Things about Mitchell: 1. Boxers or briefs? Thanks to Kerri, boxer briefs. Before that, K-Mart specials to swap with the girls. 2. Favorite childhood birthday gift: One of those wooden mazes with the unstable surface that you had to navigate the marble through 3. Favorite adult birthday gift: Amy gave him one of those horrible Troll dolls as a gag. It now lives in his wardrobe case and rules the roost in there. 4. Toy he couldn't be separated from: a stuffed dog that he named Williams 5. Top of his game batting average: .295 6. First sentence: Amy hurt me! 7. Favorite bachelor food aside from beer: orange juice 8. Favorite unit of study in school: Astronomy 9. First thing he learned how to cook: hamburgers. On the grill, of course 10. What he was shopping for when he met Kerri: tomatoes 11. How he knew his parents approved of his final career choice: Sonya gave him a silver dragon ring that he never takes the stage without. 12. First thing he bought with ShapeShifter money: a custom Les Paul. 13. Worst job he ever had: helping haul sets around Riverview's flailing community access TV station. Thursday Thirteen #11 -- Meet and Greet Mitchell Voss
![]() |
Header design by The Tour Manager. Although Trevor's Song is, presumably, about Trevor Wolff, Mitchell Voss figures pretty prominently into what goes on during the story -- and in what happens before and after, too. So here are some facts about Mitchell, so you have a better idea of who you're dealing with. 1. His blonde hair is an impossible color. So blonde it's almost white, shot through with strands of silver and gold to give it depth. Trevor hates Mitchell's hair; he thinks it's a chick magnet. He's right. 2. Before he picked up a guitar, Mitchell wanted to be a pro baseball player. He had potential, too, but soon discovered you got more girls with a guitar. 3. Once he learned the requisite three chords of rock and roll, he realized that making music was what he was meant to do. And getting girls paled in comparison to what he could make a guitar do. 4. He's the youngest of three kids. His two older siblings, Beth and Amy, torment him endlessly in that lovingly sisterly way. Especially Amy. 5. He torments the girls back, especially Amy. One of his favorite stunts as a teen was walking naked from the bathroom to his bedroom when she had friends over. He, of course, had to walk right past her room. And if the door was shut, he, of course, had to interrupt for something. 6. He never once considered going to college or trade school. He was going to make it without any of that. And he did. 7. Once Trevor talked him into putting the band together, he found a way to pay for voice lessons. Self-taught on guitar, he also took music theory classes at Riverview Music Consortium. But that's not going to college. It's taking a class to learn about music. 8. Mitchell loves to grill. Not cook. Grill. If it can't be grilled, he won't make it. That said, he grills odd things (brownies?). Or… tries to. 9. When he moved out of his parents' house, he rented a rat trap apartment within walking distance to All Access. He stayed in that apartment even after he could afford something nicer, only leaving it for the farm house. 10. He loves to swim and play in the pool with the rest of the band when they're on the road. Laps are his friend; he doesn't have to think much. 11. At home, he'll add mountain biking to his hobbies. And taking up space in Daniel and Val's pool. 12. His public persona as a dick is merely a show. Even though he is a major dick at times. 13. Mitchell was quite happy being a cigarette-smoking stud when he met Kerri. One date with her -- the date that opens Trevor's Song, in fact -- and all that changed. Don't forget to scroll down, now that you know Mitchell a bit better, and enter the meme contest. Books galore to the winners. I'm taking entries until the 20th of January, so put on your creativity caps and have at it. Links to other Thursday Thirteens! 1. (leave your link in comments, I’ll add you here!) |
